Arusha National Park
A Rewarding Park to Start Your Safari
Welcome to the home of acrobatic black and white colubus monkeys. Arusha National Park is the smallest park in northern Tanzania but it is the most rewarding park for starting your safari as it is an exceptional combination of game viewing, canoeing, and walking safaris.
Arusha National Park is 137 km² in area, situated north-east of Arusha town, northern Tanzania's safari capital. It is a perfect way to begin your Tanzania safari. The area is inhabited with species which are not seen elsewhere in northern Tanzania. The landscape is very unique with different kinds of vegetation.
The park is located on the slopes of Mount Meru, Tanzania's second highest mountain after Kilimanjaro. This dormant volcano is 4,565 m (14,980 ft) above sea level. Its fertile lower slopes, covered in dense forest, support a diverse fauna and flora. Mount Meru has a spectacular view of its big neighbour, Mount Kilimanjaro and the Rift Valley as well.
Arusha National Park is covered with dense forest, swamp and grassland. The Ngurdoto Crater stretches 3 km across and is surrounded by forest and swamp.
The Momella Lakes have mineral and algae which attract many water birds and fauna including the beautiful acrobatic black and white colubus monkeys, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, waterbucks, zebras, bushbucks, blue monkeys and many more mammals.
Arusha National Park also offers a good variety of birds including greater and lesser flamingoes as well as more than 400 other bird species.
